IBC '24
BIG ISLAND, HAWAI'I
JULY 18-24, 2024

E Kipa Mai (Hawaiian for “Come visit.”) to the 13th International Beachcombing Conference (IBC '24) on Hawaii’s Big Island (aka Hawai’i).

Larger than 7 mainland states, the Big Island is one of the most unique, ecologically diverse places on the planet. With 4 out 5 major climate zones, from snow to sea, where else can you see a snow capped mountain, an active volcano, tumbling waterfalls and palm strewn beaches all in one day? For a beachcomber, the Big Island tempts with blond sandy beaches and black sand lava rock ones  (and even a green one!) and beach treasures ranging from driftwood, sea glass, marbles and pottery shards to exotic shells, olivine crystals and corals. Occasionally, too, a sunbathing turtle or monk seal will grace the shorelines.

This summer, there will be TWO boutique IBC ‘24’s, one in mid-July from the 18-23 and one in mid-August from the 15-20. These will be smaller gatherings (around 20 people each) with emphasis placed on Big Island history and culture, regional beach treasures, and beachcomb tips, techniques and treasure ID’ing. Each will include some tutorials but will mostly focus on on-site beachcomb practicums and island exploration.

Along with beachcombing, field trip activities will include a visit to a volcano; exploring upland ranching country, old plantation towns, waterfalls, lava fields, historic heiaus and beaches, beaches, beaches. You can also independently sign up for horseback riding, night diving with manta rays, pickleball lessons, or canoe paddling excursions.

As always, IBC will begin with an evening Wine & Cheese Reception and 1 or 2 tutorials to orient you to the island history and context as it relates to the beach treasures you may find. The week ends with a farewell dinner and in between, you’ll spend 6 days beachcombing, exploring the island, meeting and seeing the collections of local beachcombers, hiking through lava tunnels, over black sand beaches and hanging with like-minded people! We'll even take you out for lunch at some of the island's favorite restaurants. Each of you will receive a welcome lei and special beach treasure, and be able to enjoy our famous beach treasure swap table, raffle and coastal arts workshop.

So, E Kipa Mai! Pack your bags for a week of island fun where the water, weather and beachcombing are great!
