CONFERENCE OVERVIEW 2017
There’s a big, beautiful world out there, just waiting for you to…
COME OUTSIDE AND PLAY!
Join Dr. Beachcomb for another amazing beachcomb experience at the 2017 International Beachcombing Conference (IBC ’17).
IBC ’16, which took place on Hawaii’s Big Island, was so much fun that we are holding it on the Big Island again. But this time, IBC will be held in February, a cooler month with stronger trade winds and waves, and an ideal time to whale watch! But there’s much more than whales to view. In the world’s most geographically remote region, there are also active volcanoes, snoozing sea turtles, snow, the state’s earliest Native Hawaiian settlements, monk seals and more.
Big Island beaches are a study in contrasts: from fine grained buff-colored sand to coral white sand, black lava or green olivine beaches. Some shorelines are situated roadside, others are located at the end of winding jungle trails. Each beach holds different treasures: shells, drift seeds, sea urchins, volcanic glass, olivine, sea glass, pottery shards and more.
IBC ’17 is educationally focused, offering you special opportunities to learn more about beachcombing in general and this remarkable Island in particular. We do this through tutorials, field trips, and discussion groups led by beachcomb experts, coastal authors, archaeologists, historians and geologists. Along with these activities are classes on specific beach arts, beach treasure I.D sessions, films, ‘goody’ bags and a swap table teeming with free beach treasures, yours for the taking.
Participants will have ample opportunity to expand their combing know-how. Activities are designed to give you a broader view of specific factors affecting where and how to beachcomb, why certain things appear on certain shorelines, and what tricks will help you ID or determine age and/or origin of your beach finds. Most participants also develop new friendships and expand their beachcomb networks. Above all, you will have FUN.
So think Hawaiian chants and hula, black nights, starry skies, palm trees, trade winds and a vast expanse of Pacific Ocean. For beachcombers and nature lovers, it doesn’t get much better than this. Maybe time to treat yourself to an exhilarating, unforgettable tropical beachcomb experience at IBC ’17 with Dr. Beachcomb.
Affordable lodging is located near the conference site. Conference fee includes delicious group receptions and meals, all tutorials and films, three field trips and/or arts classes, free access to the Sea Glass Festival and beach treasure swap table. Space is limited to 55 participants, so book early!
